Design and development of thresher-cum-pearler for finger millet and baryard millet is an important technological innovation, which not only help in promoting the cultivation of these neglected and high value crops but will also help in reducing drudgery of the farmers. It is an electro-mechanical post-harvest processing machine suitably designed and developed for the purpose of simultaneous threshing and pearling of finger millet as well as threshing, de-husking and polishing of barnyard millet. It works on the principal of impact and shear on the grains. The thrshing drum is provided with six leather flats fitted on the six MS flats, which provide gentle impact and shear as well as mild rubbing action for threshing, de-husking, pearling and polishing of the grains. A sieve assembly is also attached with different operations. The length, width and height of the machine are 660mm, 310mm abd 1040mm, respectively, with a total weight of 45 kg. The machine is powered with 1HP single-phase electric motor. The threshing and pearling capacity of finger millet is 20 to 25 kg/hr. In case of barnyard millet the threshing capacity of 2.5 to 3.0 kg/hr. The operational cost of this machine is Rs. 13.60/hr. For getting higher threshing and pearling efficiency the threshing drum speed should be maintained at a constant speed of 900 rpm and the car heads of the crops should have moisture content below 12% at the time of threshing. The design is simple and easily adaptable in rural areas for safe post harvest processing of these crops.
