The up-front prediction of the gear to be selected can be performed in a one-step or a two-step version. An artificial neural network (KNN) is used in order to determine the gear to be selected next by using data such as the position of the accelerator, the derivative of the pedal position, the speed of the vehicle, and the derivative of the vehicle speed. For the training of the neural network (KNN) the determined gear is compared with the actual selected gear.
