PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous composition for water-repellent treatment of zinc and zinc alloy, containing a specific nonionic high-molecular-weight compound, efficiently giving zinc or zinc alloy water repellency to markedly reduce the contact area of water to the metallic materials and improve their anticorrosion properties. ;SOLUTION: This composition contains a nonionic high-molecular-weight compound bearing hydrophilic groups and hydrophobic groups, preferably in a concentration of 0.1-10wt.%. The nonionic polymer is, for example, a polyvinyl alcohol or Methyl Cellulose (R), preferably having a weight-average molecular weight of 10,000-16,000. The objective composition preferably contains 0.01-10wt.% of an alkali metal salt of a polyacrylate with a weight-average molecular weight of 250,000-7,000,000. The composition preferably has a pH of 6-8. This composition is preferably applied to a chemical conversion-treated substrate which is obtained, for example, by plating a substrate such as steel with zinc or a zinc alloy to form its coating layer and the coating layer is subjected to the chemical conversion treatment by using a chemical conversion solution free from hexavalent chromium.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
