The read/write method has a fault recognition code associated with each of the operating parameters entered in a main memory location (26), allowing detection and correction of incorrect bits in a stored dataword. When the number of incorrect bits is only 1 less than the maximum number of incorrect bits which can be corrected via the fault recognition code, the main memory location is replaced by a back-up memory location (28).
