The present invention relates to a method for producing a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery and a cathode active material prepared by the method, wherein the primary particles have a particle diameter of 10-30 nm, and the secondary particles are formed by agglomeration of the primary particles with a particle size of 5-15 μm. The present invention provides a method for manufacturing a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery having a high tap density, excellent thermal stability during de-lithography, and improved high rate characteristics, and a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery manufactured by the method. In the method of preparing the positive electrode active material of the present invention, by controlling the amount of ammonium ions, the metal salt composition ratio can be controlled by preventing the dissolution of the ammonium metal complex ion due to the excess ammonium.
