PURPOSE: A lens, and an optical system, an optical head and an optical disc apparatus are provided to be used in a compatible recording and reproducing apparatus which can record or reproduce data on various kinds of discs such as a CD(Compact Disc), a DVD(Digital Versatile Disc) and a BD(Blu-ray Disc). CONSTITUTION: A lens focuses homogeneous lights of various kinds of wavelengths through a refraction action. An area on at least one lens surface, commonly used in all the homogeneous lights, is divided on plural non-spherical parts which have different refractive indexes. An equality of Max(Aij)/Min(Aij) 3 is satisfied with respect to each wavelength, wherein Aij is Bij-mij, Bij is Dj*(ni-1)/lamda i -C, lamda i is a wavelength, Dj is a step height value in parallel with a lens beam axis, ni is a refractive index of a lens for a wavelength, mij is an integer nearest to Bij, and C is a compensation term.
