PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for effectively performing soft handover in an OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)/WCDMA mobile communication system are provided to increase reception performance and data transmission capacity of downlink by enabling a UE(User Equipment) to receive the same data from selected Node Bs and perform soft-combining. CONSTITUTION: A UE enters a handover area and receives reference signals from multiple Node Bs(120). The UE performs channel demodulation(122) and measures an arrival time of each signal received from each Node B(124). The UE measures a delay time according to an arrival of other reference signals based on a signal with the fastest arrival time among the received reference signals(126). The UE checks whether a difference between the reference signal and the arrival delay time of the other signals is within a GI(Guard Interval) of the OFDM(128). The UE selects signals existing within the GI as Node Bs that can support soft handover(130). The UE generates FBI(Feedback Information) by checking index information of the selected Node Bs(132) and transmits it to a UTRAN(134). The UTRAN checks the received FBI and transmits data to the Node Bs corresponding to the FBI and the UE soft-combines signals transmitted from the selected Node Bs(136).
