There is provided a map providing device (10) for receiving position information indicating a location of a mobile terminal (30) from the mobile terminal (30) having at least a display section (32) and transmitting a map image corresponding to the location information received, to the mobile terminal (30). The map providing device (10) includes: reference direction identification means (104) for identifying a reference direction required for matching the direction of the map image displayed on the display section (32) of the mobile terminal (30) according to the position information received from the mobile terminal (30); reference direction information generation means (100) for generating reference direction information for making a user of the mobile terminal (30) recognize the reference direction identified by the reference direction identification means (104); and transmission means (100) for transmitting the reference direction information generated by the reference direction information generation means (100) together with the map image to the mobile terminal.
