PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermo-optical variable optical attenuator which realizes low crosstalk between adjacent waveguide arrays and which is applicable to an array type variable optical attenuator.;SOLUTION: The thermo-optical variable optical attenuator 100 using an optical material with negative thermo-optical effect is constructed by arranging a multimode light propagation part 3 between single mode optical waveguides 1, 8 via taper parts 2, 7, arranging a heating thin film heater 4 on the upper part of the multimode light propagation part 3 inclined by an angle β with respect to a light propagation direction of a first optical waveguide 50, and furthermore, arranging a second optical waveguide 9 by optically joining it to the side face 3S1 of the multimode light propagation part 3 and inclining it by an angle 2β with respect to the light propagation direction of the first optical waveguide 50.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
