PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical variable attenuator which consumes always constant electric power even when the attenuation ratio is fluctuated and a method of controlling the same.;SOLUTION: The optical variable attenuator is constructed by connecting a symmetric MZI (Mach Zehnder interferometer) part 108 and asymmetric MZI part 109 in series by using output waveguides 107a, b, cross ports of the respective MZI parts, as output waveguides, and by setting a sum of optical path differences of the symmetric MZI part 108 and the asymmetric MZI part 109 to λ/2+Mλ wherein λ represents a wavelength of signal light and M is an integer. Further, whatever the attenuation ratio is , current to be fed through thin film heaters 104a, b is controlled so as to make a sum of phase change amounts of the symmetric MZI part 108 and the asymmetric MZI part 109 always π.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
