PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for adjusting a cerebrospinal fluid flow in a hydrocephalic patient by regulating the drainage rate of the excessive cerebrospinal fluid in response to ventricular volume variation in the patient.;SOLUTION: An adjustable drainage system for regulating the cerebrospinal fluid flow in the hydrocephalic patient 10 regulates the drainage rate in response to ventricular volume variations in the patient. The system includes an adjustable valve 40 and a volume sensor 50 that can be periodically energized with an external system controller device 60 by the patient or an attending physician to determine when, or if, a change in the ventricular volume has occurred. The system enables the user to adjust the valve's resistance in response to changes in the ventricular volume using the controller device so that a target ventricular volume can be achieved. A method for draining cerebrospinal fluid continuously form the cranial cavity of the patient using the system is also provided.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
