The source has a rhodotron (20) generating an electron beam, and a thin plate (28) receiving the beam at preset angle of incidence to generate positrons. The generated electron beam is continuous or quasi-continuous and the energy of the electrons is of the order of 10 mega electron volt. The thickness of the plate is less than 500 micrometer, and the preset angle of incidence is less than 10 degree.
