The procedure for estimating and predicting the mass of air entering the combustion chamber (2) of an i.c. engine (1) with an inlet manifold (3), butterfly valve (4) and inlet valves (12) includes a stage in which pressure inside the inlet manifold is measured, and a calculation stage for a Kalman gain measured as a function of the pressure and a covariance of the calculated noise measurement. It also has a stage for calculating the estimated inlet manifold pressure as a function of the measured pressure, the Kalman gain and the expected value for the measured noise, a stage for calculating the predicted manifold pressure from a linearisation of the manifold air dynamics equation, and a stage for calculating the instantaneous estimated pressure at the inlet valves as a function of the instantaneous air flow at the butterfly valve and the predicted manifold pressure.
