Kit for detecting the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-associated virus (human pneumonia-associated coronavirus; HPAC) by real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR). Kit for detecting the severe acute respiratory syndrome-associated virus (human pneumonia-associated coronavirus; HPAC) by real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) comprises a forward primer (FP) and reverse primer (RP), both of about 18-31 nucleotides (nt), and a probe (P), of about 18-35 nt, that is labeled with a fluorescent reporter dye (FRD) and a quencher dye (QD), at least one of which is a fluorescent dye. FP and RP bind, respectively, to regions 69-98 and 123-168 of a 300 bp sequence (1), reproduced, while (P) binds to region 89-132 of (1). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) oligonucleotides of 18-31 bp that bind to the 69-98 and 123-168 regions of (1); and (2) similar kit containing FP and RP of 18-35 nt, binding, respectively, to regions 1-240 and 60-300 of (1) and a probe of 12-40 nt that binds to the 21-279 region of (1).
