The device has an upright column (2) with a top counter plate (4), carrying a hydraulic cylinder (6) for a splitter wedge (7). A mounting block (5) on the column is for connection to a tractor etc. The splitter (1) is connected axially pivoted to the block via a pivoting unit (12). The mainly horizontal pivot shaft (13) of the unit extends from the operating side (14) to the back (15) of the splitter, and is born in a bearing console (16) on the column. The pivoting unit is moved by a hydraulic cylinder (19). The transmission device (11) to drive both cylinders is located on the mounting block, and is driven by a tractor etc. pref. via a power take-off shaft (20).
