The device has a receiving space (3) for a wood to be split, and a rotator provided for the receiving space, where the wood to be split is rotatable around an axis parallel to a splitting direction by the rotator. The rotator has a rotary drive (4) and/or guiding unit for guiding the wood during the rotation. The rotary drive has a rotary plate or disk, and is provided at an attachment of a front side of the wood. A grinding or contact unit is provided in the form of projecting thorns or prongs. An independent claim is also included for a method for splitting wood.
