PURPOSE: Provided is an improved catalytic partial oxidation process for hydrocarbons, which is initiated at low temperature with no use of separate heat sources and preheating steps. CONSTITUTION: The process comprises contacting a mixture including a hydrocarbon-containing feed gas, oxygen-containing feed gas and hydrogen with a catalytic amount of reduced metal catalyst comprising a transition metal selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, iron, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhenium, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium and combinations thereof supported on or in a cerium oxide-coated zirconia monolith support. The process is initiated at a low temperature of about 10 deg.C or less to produce hydrogen and carbon monooxide.
