PURPOSE: A culture device for cellular media, microdevices capable of utilizing biological cytosensors and methods for keeping various cell lines viable, particularly in small portable microfluidic packages are provided, thereby easily culturing and maintaining a larger number of cells. CONSTITUTION: The culture device(10) for cellular media(12) comprises the parts of: a biomedia growth chamber(14) defining a closed environment; a source of material supporting cellular function; and an electronically controllable jetting device(16, 16') which is in communication with the source of material supporting cellular function, and emits material into the biomedia growth chamber, wherein the culture device(10) further comprises a storage reservoir(18, 18') in communication with the electronically controllable jetting device(16, 16'); the electronically controllable jetting device(16, 16') has an orifice outlet(20, 20') in communication with the biomedia growth chamber(14); the biomedia growth chamber(14) includes a biomedia support surface(22) which is positioned relative to the jetting device at a location capable of facilitating observation and analysis of cellular function; the culture device(10) further comprises an effluent removal mechanism(28, 30) associated with the biomedia growth chamber(14); and the culture device(10) further comprises a temperature regulating mechanism capable of controlling temperature in the biomedia growth chamber(14).
