The present invention relates in part to a method for inducing an inflammatory response that is characteristic of chronic pulmonary disease in one or more test animals comprising the steps of: (a) exposing the test animals to tobacco smoke on multiple occasions; and (b) allowing the test animals to develop a sub-chronic inflammatory response; and (c) evaluating the effect of a test agent(s) on the inflammatory response induced by a sub chronic exposure to tobacco smoke.
