The invention concerns a mask for making at least an optical guide with variable embedding depth in a substrate, said mask comprising at least a transition pattern (25b) designed to be aligned with a part of the guide, called transition zone (3b), said pattern being capable of modulating a burial electric field applied to the guide, in said transition zone, said transition pattern including orifices. The invention also concerns the method for using said mask to obtain said guide with variable embedding depth. The invention is applicable in all fields using waveguides with variable embedding depth and in particular in the field of optical telecommunications. The waveguides with variable embedding depth can be used for example, in components including in particular mode adapters or optical power attenuators or still optical sensors.
