PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new nonpackaging approach to functionalize a nanotube such as a carbon nanotube in organic or inorganic solvents.;SOLUTION: The surface of the carbon nanotube can be functionalized in a nonpackaging mode with a functional conjugated polymer containing a functional group. Polymers which noncovalently bond the carbon nanotube in a nonpackaging mode are provided. For example, various polymers which have a comparatively rigid skeleton suited in noncovalently bonding the carbon nanotube substantially along the lengthwise direction of the nanotube not around its diameter are provided. In preferred polymers, the main interaction between a polymer skeleton and the surface of the nanotube is a parallel π stacking. The polymers further contain at least one functional moiety of any one of various desirable functional groups for functionalizing the carbon nanotube as an extended part from the skeleton.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
