PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound comprising a specific optically active phosphine compound, useful as a catalyst high in selectivity and catalytic activity in asymmetric hydrogenation reaction by forming a complex with a transition metal, providing an optically active substance by asymmetric hydrogenation of acetol. ;SOLUTION: This new optically active diphosphine compound is shown by formula I (Ph is phenyl; X is Cl or Br; R1 and R2 are each a 1-3C alkyl) or formula II and is useful as a new catalyst excellent in selectivity (chemical selectivity and enantio selectivity), catalytic acitivty, etc., as a ligand for an effective catalyst especially in asymmetric hydrogenation reaction. The compound is obtained by reacting a ditriflate substance of an (R)-(+)-2,2'- dihydroxy-5,5'-dihalo-4,4'-6,6'-tetraalkyl-1,1'-biphenyl of formula III (Tf is trifluoromethanesulfonyl) or formula IV with diphenylphosphine oxide, reducing the resulting substance, reacting the resultant substance with diphenylphosphine oxide and reducing the reaction product.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
