Method uses test absorber (19) located in X-ray source housing, brought into reproducible, measurement position with reference to X-ray beam source focus point. Absorber has concentric rings and mid point of rings is aligned to mid point (18) of input window (11) of X-ray receiver to determine beam source position. Method determines relationship between shift of image of test absorber (19) from mid point (18) of input window of X-ray beam receiver and the coordinates of the focus point. Continuous correlation function is determined from basic values and stored in evaluation unit of X-ray apparatus. Image is taken and stored in image memory with satisfactory contrast, position and focus of primary beam focus and image rotation. Test absorber is moved from park position to measurement position inside the X-ray source (8). Image of object is taken with the test absorber in the measurement position located after X-ray source. The two images are digitally subtracted in image processor of X-ray unit. Vector of displacement is determined from test absorber image determined from subtraction and an image of the absorber centered about the midpoint (18) of the input window (11) of the X-ray receiver. Coordinates of focus point are determined using correlation function and vector values. Test absorber is moved to park position.
