In a first step at least one filter characteristic parameter is established, characterizing a desired filter frequency response for the machine concerned - e.g. the machine resonant frequency. In step (S20) an optimization criterion is determined or specified to check the quality of the FIR (Finite Impulse Filters). In step (S30) a window function is selected to reduce the effect of using an infinite number of filter coefficients. In step (S40) a window function parameter is selected which can be varied according to the desired optimization within specific limits. In step (S50) for each variation of the filter parameter, here the window function parameter, the related value of the optimizing criterion determined for checking the optimizing quality. In step (S60) the window function is selected which best provides the specified criterion. With this window function in step (S70) the filter coefficients of the FIR filter are determined.
