The invention provides a crystalline form of a polypeptide corresponding to the catalytic domain of a matrix metalloproteinase protein, MMP9. The active site binding region of the MMP9 protein is defined by its amino acid residues and their atomic coordinates. This three dimensional structure may be used to select or design chemical modulators of MMP9, particularly MMP9 inhibitors. These modulators may be used to treat a metalloproteinase mediated disease or condition.
