A method of contraception which comprises administrating a combination of 17a-ethinylestradiol and norgestimate for 21 successive days to a female of childbearing age. For the first 7 days in a daily dose of 25mg of 17a-ethinylestradiol and 0.18mg of norgestimate. For the next 7 days in a daily dose of 25mg of 17a-ethinylestradiol and 0.215mg of norgestimate. For the next 7 days a daily dose of 25mg of 17a-ethinylestradiol and 0.25mg of norgestimate. The next 7 days there is no estrogen and progestogen administration. Also described is a triphasic oral contraceptive unit having 21 separate dosage units, each unit containing a combination of an estrogen and a progestogen.
