PURPOSE: To obtain a new phthalonitrile compound used as an intermediate for synthesizing a phthalocyanine compound useful as a near IR light-absorbing colorant used for optical cards, organic photoconductors, near IR light-absorbing filters, heat ray-shielding films, protecting spectacles, etc. ;CONSTITUTION: The phthalonitrile compound of formula I (R1, R2 are alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, dialkylaminoalkyl), e.g. 4(2-aminophenylthio)-5-chloro-3,6- dimethoxyphthalonitrile. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a phthalonitrile compound of formula II with a 2-aminothiophenol in the presence of a base. The phthalonitrile compound of formula I is reacted with a metal or a metal derivative to obtain a phthalocyanine compound. The phthalocyanine compound obtained by the method is new. The phthalocyanine compound is excellent in a near IR light-absorbing ability, excellent in solubility in various organic solvents and resins, and excellent in durability.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
