Use of a nucleic acid (I) that causes synthesis of the polypeptide AKIN11, to induce or increase the resistance to pathogen attack in plants, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an expression cassette (EC) comprising a promoter; a sequence that: (i) expresses a fully defined 512 amino acid AKIN11 polypeptide sequence (S3) given in the specification; or (ii) is a fully defined 1825, 3550 or 3550 amino acid sequence (S1, S2, and S4 respectively), and a terminator; (2) preparation (M1) of transformed plants with resistance to a pathogen, by incorporation of (I); (3) transformed plants produced by M1, or their parts; (4) inducing or increasing plant resistance to a pathogen by contact with AKIN11; and (5) a fusion polypeptide of AKIN11 and a signal peptide that provides localization to a particular compartment of a plant cell.
