The safety device uses a sub-system (10,16,18,20,22) controlling an operating function of the vehicle, e.g. the anti-locking braking, for providing a potential impact signal, received by a control (12) and used for adjusting the operation of a second sub-system (14,26,28,30,32), for preparing the vehicle for the impact. The second sub-system may be used for controlling the vehicle suspension, with the chassis dropped for lowering the vehicle center of gravity prior to impact. An Independent claim for a method for preparing a vehicle for a potential impact is also included.
