A communications device (CommD) (21) in a vehicle (20) links to a communications system (25) in a toll system (24) and/or to a GPS system (23) to identify use of a toll road directly or via an electronic road map (ERM) (26) stored in the vehicle. The CommD gets a message about the level of toll to be paid or picks up this information from the ERM. The CommD uses a chip card device (22) in the vehicle to exchange data from a memory in a chip card (1) with a control circuit.
