PURPOSE: To obtain the subject optical fiber excellent in the mechanical strength of its carbon film and hermetic characteristics by providing a means for minimizing the amount of a sealing gas flowing from a sealing chamber into a hot CVD reaction oven. CONSTITUTION: The surface of an optical fiber is coated with a carbon film by passing the fiber just after drawn through a carbon film coating device 5 equipped with a hot CVD reaction oven 22. In this method, the device 5 has the following scheme: the optical fiber inlet side is furnished with an upper sealing chamber 21 (sealing gas inlet: 24) for filling a sealing gas to block the oven 22 from the outside atmosphere, while the optical fiber outlet side of the oven 22 is furnished with a lower sealing chamber 23 (sealing gas inlet: 27) for filling a sealing gas to block also the oven 22 from the outside atmosphere. The pressure difference between the upper sealing chamber 21 and the oven 22 (pressure difference measuring parts: 28, 29) is measured; based on this result, the upper sealing chamber 21 is fed with an optimum amount of a sealing gas.
