The water running off the road drains through the filter layer and a layer of geotextile (20) into a second filter (36) layer which lies under the gutter and the edge of the road. There is a second geotextile layer (11) under the edge of the road. There may be a pipe embedded in the second filter layer to carry off the filtered rainwater.
