Optical determination of electrical and/or physiological properties of microscopic and submicroscopic colloidal or biological objects comprises measuring the orientation of the suspended or emulsified objects in an optical analysis cell (13). A multidimensional electromagnetic field is applied to this using electrodes (14) or coils, the cycle time of the field being at least one order of magnitude below the orientation time of the objects.
