Device for locating cable faults using an impulse reflection method using impulse and power capacitors for generation of a spark across a spark gap that generates a signal in the faulty cable
In a first step an impulse capacitor (10) is charged and then discharges in an impulse manner via a spark gap (7) into a faulty cable (13). In a second step a parallel power capacitor (1) is charged above the fault spark voltage. Closing of the main switch (11) discharges this into the faulty position until the spark gap sparks again. If the charge of the power capacitor is not sufficient to cause sparking, the test voltage is switched directly to the cable and the main switch is replaced by a diode (3). If fault sparking occurs the diode initiates the sparking cycle again.
