The invention relates to a method for influencing the exhaust gas temperature in an internal combustion engine which comprises at least one working piston, which has a variable compression ratio, and whose exhaust gas is fed to an exhaust gas cleaning device. The inventive method is characterized in that the time for opening the combustion chamber exhaust valve which depends on the position of the piston can be variably adjusted according to the state of the internal combustion engine or of the exhaust gas cleaning device.
