An optical article (21) comprising a flexible plastic substrate (22) having anindex of refraction ranging from 1.55 to 1.71 and having a first surface (23)and a second surface (24) and an anti-reflection coating (26) carried by thefirst surface (23). The anti-reflection coating (26) consists of a high indexmaterial and a low index material in which the high index material has anindex of refraction of 2.0 or greater to provide the index of refractiondifference between the substrate and the high index material of 0.29 to 0.75.The low index material is formed of a material having an index of refractionof 1.38 or less to provide an index of refraction difference between the highindex material and the low index material ranging from approximately 0.59 to0.92.
