The insert comprises a cylindrical mantle (1) with a filter device (6) extending through the mantle base (8). The top end of the filter device is covered with a cloth (7) which is water-permeable but sludge-impermeable, and the bottom end is provided with a filter cartridge (9) containing absorbent material. Sewage flowing into the pit is guided by a flange (14) onto the dome-shaped top end of the filter device and any sludge accumulated on top of the cloth is flushed into a sludge collection region (18) between the mantle and filter device.
