A mechanical handling device feeds bottles esp. beer bottles (1,1a) with wire clip closures into a labelling machine. The transporter has a star arm arrangement (3,21) which rotates about an axis (3,21), each arm having a pick-up pocket (3',21'). Labels are applied by a closed loop flexible belt (8',9') which is rotated by a drive system (18).
