PURPOSE: New recombinant trehalose synthase and the expression vector including its gene are provided. Nucleotide sequences of the trehalose synthase are isolated from thermophilic strain, Thermus caldophilus GK24, and a method for production of trehalose using recombinant enzyme is also provided. CONSTITUTION: A trehalose synthase is the enzyme which converts maltose to alpha, alpha-trehalose and alpha, beta-trehalose. The recombinant trehalose synthase is over-expressed in Escherichia coli using the expression vector including its gene which is isolated from Thermus caldophilus GK24. The trehalose is obtained by the reaction of the purified recombinant trehalose synthase with maltose or hydrolytic product of starch.
