PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a castable refractory improved in resistance to severe erosion, by coating the surface of granules of a ceramic-based refractory raw material having a prescribed content of magnesium oxide and particle diameter with scaly graphite pieces under specific conditions with a thermosetting phenol resin. ;SOLUTION: Granules or ground materials having 10-0.01mm particle diameters are prepared by using a ceramic-based refractory raw material comprising one or more of 20-99.5wt.% of MgO, 20-99.5wt.% of Al2O3 and 20-99.5wt.% of CaO. The surface of the granules, etc., is coated with 30-0.1wt.% based on the material to be coated of pieces of scaly graphite or powder of artificial graphite having 250.0-0.1μm particle diameters by using 0.1-10wt.% based on the material to be coated of a thermosetting phenol resin or a cellulose-based adhesive to hot stick the scaly graphite to the surface of the granules of the ceramic-based refractory raw material. The carbon-containing composite ceramic-based raw material in an amount of 90-1wt.% based on a raw martial is used to prepare the castable refractory.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
