The vacuum switch (1) has a common operating drive (11) for closing and opening the switch paths (5) of the different switch poles (2,3,4). The operating drive has an associated control device (12), allowing advance opening of the switch path of the centre pole (3) relative to the opening of the remaining switch paths, so that the switching arc of the centre pole is extinguished first. Pref. the opening of the switch path for the centre pole is initiated immediately, while the opening of the switch paths for the outer poles is delayed, via a time control providing offset opening commands.
