The invention relates to a method to take into account the energy utilization and environmental protection in crop dryers with belt conveyor. In order to carry out this task, in contrast to the previously used high-temperature drying, it is necessary to dry in the low-temperature range in order to be able to use or recover regenerative environmental heat more effectively. Dryers with belt conveyors are suitable for meeting this requirement. The proposal according to the invention relates to a countercurrent and cocurrent airflow system acting simultaneously in the drying chamber (1), as a result of which the area utilization in the belt dryer is increased and at the same time the temperature gradient between inlet and outlet air can be reduced. This flow characteristic is achieved by introducing heated air at the wet material inlet (A) and at the dry material outlet (B) and discharging it approximately in the middle in a common stream (C). Before it emerges outdoors, a large part of the waste heat is recovered by a heat exchanger (6) and returned to the inlet air (E). Also important in this air routing system are the mutually offset air diverting chambers (15, 16) above and below the conveyor belts (2, 3), which always lead the air flow in a cascade fashion as a cross flow through the drying belt levels.
