The network interconnects two subscriber terminals (1A,1B) with other subscriber terminals (1C-1E), by two bus networks (3A,3B). Two terminals (2A,2B) are interconnected by a communications network (4). Two network terminals (2A,2B) control operations. Remote testing of protocol is carried out by an analyser (5) connected to one of the terminals by a bus network (3C), and by the addition of a specialist terminal (11) to sample the protocol. ADVANTAGE - Remote testing of network does not need qualified personnel or equipment to go to site, and therefore is cost effective. Applicable also to transport protocols e.g. X25 and to ISO/OSI.
