Ikonomou and Paul KebarleABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA novel electrospray interface provides highsensitivity and signal stability for massspectrometric detection of analytes in solvents withhigh water content including 100% water. Theelectrospray capillary tip section is heated close tothe boiling point of the solvent. An approximately20°C hotter airstream is also used. Its flow iscoaxial and codirectional to the electrospray. Withthis arrangement, the analyte signal sensitivity andstability obtained with neat water is equal to thatwith neat methanol. The charged state (degree ofprotonation) of protonated peptides sprayed from neatwater and the heated spray is essentially identical tothat observed with unheated spray where the solventwas 80% methanol - 20% water.
