PURPOSE: To efficiently produce useful substances such as toropolones by culturing a Cupressaceae plant cell, allowing a biosynthesis-activating factor and a resistance inducing factor to act on the cultured cell so as to accumulate high-concentration useful substances in the cultured cell and mass-producing its cullus. ;CONSTITUTION: A cell of a slice of a Cupressaceae plant (e.g. Cupresessus lusitanica Mill.) is cultured in a culture medium containing a biosynthesis- activating factor and/or a resistance inducing factor, i.e., a cultured solution of a microorganism and/or its extract and a metal salt, etc., at room temperatures for 4 weeks so as to accumulate high-concentration useful substances, e.g. toropolones such as hinokitiol in the cultured cell. After growing the cullus cells containing high-concentration useful substances, the resultant cultured cells are collected and extracted with an organic solvent such as ethanol, thus massproducing the objective useful substances of the Cupressaceae plant, useful for a cosmetic, a medicine, a quasidrug, a food, etc.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
