Distance measurement using emission of radio or ultrasound waves e.g. for navigation or anti-collision system - measuring difference in propagation times RF radio and ultrasound waves between two stations, and multiplying difference by speed of propagation
The procedure consists of measuring the difference in propagation times of radio and ultrasound waves transmitted between two fixed or mobile stations (A, B). The difference obtained is multiplied by the velocity of propagation of the ultrasound waves. The transmitter has an ultrasonic generator (1) supplying a signal to a modulator (2), which also receives a signal from a generator (5), an amplifier (3) and a transducer (4) converting the electric signal to acoustic energy. An RF circuit has a modulator (7) which is supplied from a generator (6) and from the ultrasonic circuit, an amplifier (8) and an antenna (9). The receiver also comprises ultrasonic and RF parts. ADVANTAGE - Overcomes problems associated with methods such as radar or satellite based Global Positioning System. Relatively precise distance measurement between stations while tolerating relatively imprecise measurements of propagation times.
