The quantum well inter subband infrared photodetector includes a number of quantum wells (8) which are spatially separated by broad barrier layers (6). Each quantum well comprises an asymmetrical potential distribution w.r.t. its centre plane, such that different potentials exist on the well edges. Charge carriers can be emitted especially in the direction of decreasing potential of the barrier layer, and in the other direction (13), they quickly relax into the output quantum well. The emitted charge carriers (13) form a photocurrent (1). USE/ADVANTAGE - Photovoltaic detector. Avoids effects of noise, no dark current flows.
