The airbag system has a housing (7) with the gas generator (5) mounted in a lower, cylindrical section. The lower housing is bolted to the upper housing via mounting flanges and has reinforcing flanges (18) covering the join between the housing sections. The reinforcing flanges are secured to the sides of the gas generator housing and offer slits open to the airbag section. Tags (10) are bolted to the upper housing and positioned into the slits formed by the reinforcing flanges. Under pressure the flanges are pressed onto the tags thereby strengthening the grip between the two housing sections. USE/ADVANTAGE - Airbag protection systems for vehicles. Lightweight reinforcing for gas generator housing, no risk of housing splitting under gas pressure.
