Measurements are made in a small angular range in accordance with the principle of confocal interlaced microscopy to suppress stray light and to limit the extent of the measurement volume (O) orthogonal and parallel to the axis of the beam. An aperture illuminated by the monochromatic beam from a source (L) is imaged in the centre of the chamber, and the source itself at an annular screen (RB1).
