Automatic soil extn. for soil analysis etc. - by passing solvent mixt. with continuously increasing or decreasing polarity through soil filled column(s), passing elute through solid phase columns, etc.
Automatic extn. of a contaminated soil sample comprises (a) continuously passing a solvent mixt. with continuously increasing or decreasing polarity through one or more soil-filled columns (1); (b) passing the eluate through a succession of solid phase columns (2) in which the individual solid phases have specific polarities which continuously increase or decrease from column to column; and (c) separately eluting the solid phase columns and determining the eluted constituents. The solvent mixt is pref. a two component system of non-polar and polar liquids, pref. water and a water miscible organic solvent such as dioxan, acetonitrile, ether or THF. The solid phase may be selected from (modified) silica gel, alumina, ion exchangers and resins of organic molecular sieve type. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is useful for analysing soils for halogenated hydrocarbons, phenols, alcohols, ketones, organic acids, amines and heterocyclones, prior to decontamination. It provides automatic extn. of all contaminants in a single process.
